How to Build a Good Team at Work – FOH Managers discuss…

It was 2023, and at our first forum, post pandemic, FOH managers were having problems with staffing; team members leaving for new companies with hybrid/flexi contracts and existing staff challenging their contracts and wanting to work from home…

The notes from the discussion cover some issues and suggestions…watch this space for an update on how FOH Managers are coping now and if things are getting easier…

  • Finding non agency staff is very difficult. The job role had to change during lockdown but now it is expected for Corporate Front of House staff to work normal hours, onsite, as pre-pandemic.
  • People are noticeably struggling to get back to a normal working routine 5 days a week on site. Managers are having problems with staff behavior issues being put down to mental health problems. This now has to be dealt with very sensitively and it’s always best practice to get HR advice. Another challenge is staff taking time off with Covid.
  • It is also vital to set expectations of new and existing staff that FOH is a client facing role, on site, to deliver a service, there are meetings and events that need booking and managing. This will be on their contracts – always have this backed up by HR – they are there to help with this.
  • The FOH team has to be able to work well together to provide a seamless and professional service. It is important to build strong connections with one another, the most successful teams are the happiest and get to know each other well.
  • Keeping team morale high can include group activities and free lunches, some managers are paying higher wages to staff who come into the office! Not agreed with by many of you!
  • Important to encourage team members to go the extra mile and support each other, with recognition or rewards.
  • Building your team with people who suit your needs and set their expectations right from the start. Things like, supporting other members, being involved in group activities and working on site – these are all important for staff morale. If these are not acceptable to a team member or a new candidate, it is not the right job for them!
  • So much is changing in the way other people are working, the roles and procedures for the FOH teams are changing too. Keep talking to your team members to get their opinions and feed back. They will feel valued and their advice maybe useful.
